Joints + Junctions: PRESENTing Hogan’s Alley
Curated by: Courtnay McFarlane
The video Hogan’s Alley (1994) by Andrea Fatona and Cornelia Wyngaarden documents the history of Hogan’s Alley – “an unofficial name for the T shaped intersections forming the core of Vancouver’s first concentrated Black community” 1 – between 1930 and the late 1960s. Mining municipal, CBC and personal archives, this work remembers individuals who lived in the community, as well as its institutions, hard social realities, and cultural richness. Acknowledging Black oral traditions, Hogan’s Alley centers on the embodied archive – the memories shared by the three women it features. The tales of their lives illuminate not only “their identities, but also the identities of a disappeared community”2. In documenting the previously unrecorded history of Hogan’s Alley, this work has served as an important catalyst for further artistic explorations and commemorative initiatives of this community.
The community that Rose-Ann Bailey documents in her photographic series (2011 –2013) is not one of geography but of affinity – a shared Black LGBTQ identity and membership in its dancehall scene. In the absence of community-owned and dedicated bars/clubs, and presented with relentless gentrification, the scene has been carved out by promoters/DJs who migrate across Toronto’s downtown creating safe spaces for gathering, being and connecting across myriad intersections of identity. The self-posed photo booth portraits feature individuals expressively styled, asserting agency and kinship, documenting transient lives and impermanent communal spaces.
The works in this exhibition testify to the precarity and resilience of Black communities, and the ways in which our artistic and archival practices resist the forces of structural erasure and un-remembering.
